KOLHAPUR: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday recited Abhangs (poetic phrases) of Sant Dnyaneshwar and Sant Tukaram, the 13th and 17th century saints who left mark on the several centuries-old Warkari movement.
PM Modi was laying the foundation stone of four laning of routes along which palanquins of both saints traverse to temple town of Pandharpur.
Participating in the event virtually, Modi recited famous Abhang of Sant Tukaram Maharaj- “Vishnumay Jaga, Vaishnawancha Dharma, Bhedabhed Bhrama Amangala” which roughly translate to- in this world of devotion towards lord Vishna and people following Vaishana thought, it is curse of follow discrimination. Modi quoted the Abhangs of saints to highlight the importance of Warkari Movement.
“In Wari, no one follows any discrimination. The Warkari’s refer to each other as Mauli, meaning mother. The women Warkari’s matches steps of men Warkari’s. The Warkari Movement is one of it’s kind in the world. They arrive from different places, along different routes, but their aim is common- to express devotion towards Vitthal,” said Modi.
Modi sought three pledges from people during his address. First is to plant trees alongside of the ‘Palkhi Marg‘ and he categorically said that the villages falling along the routes should take the responsibility. Second is to install clean drinking water facilities along the routes to quench the thirst of the Warkari’s who travel for weeks to reach Pandharpur during Ashadi Ekadashi. “The third pledge I want is from people of Pandharpur town. They should make the town most cleanest pilgrimage site in entire country,” said Modi.
Union road minister Nitin Gadkari who participated in the event physically held at Pandharpur in Solapur district said that he hopes to complete the work of ‘Palkhi Marg’ in one year.
“The work on some sections of ‘Palkhi Marg’ has already been started. After demand of locals we have included to widen road of 8 km stretch from Wakri to Pandharpur in the project. I am hopeful that the work will complete in a year,” said Gadkari.
Chief minister Uddhav Thackeray who participated in the event virtually assured Gadkari that the state government will extend all sorts of help to him to complete the project. Thackeray shared his experience of participating in the Wari, which he did few years ago.
“The Wari has withstand not just the heat, winds and rains but also the several attacks carried out for centuries. Therefore considering it as our responsibility, the Maharashtra government will support in every possible way to complete the works,” said Thackeray.
The ‘Palkhi Marg’, which has been given status of National Highway, will have dedicated lanes for Warkari’s to walk safely. Modi also dedicated the upradation of the highways approaching the temple town from all sides constructed by spending Rs 1,180 crore.
