NEW DELHI: A special PMLA court on Saturday remanded former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh to 14-day judicial custody in connection with a case of money laundering.
The court has rejected Enforcement Directorate’s plea for further custody of Deshmukh. The ED had sought a nine-day custody of the former minister in the said case.
Son files plea for anticipatory bail
Meanwhile, Deshmukh’s son Hrishikesh on Saturday moved sessions court and filed a petition for anticipatory bail.
The ED had issued summons to Hrishikesh for questioning in the money laundering case. ED had asked Hrishikesh to appear before it on Friday but he did not, said officials.
Anil Deshmukh, who was arrested in the aforesaid money laundering case, was taken for a medical examination from the ED office, prior to producing him before special PMLA Court in Mumbai on Saturday.
The ED arrested Anil Deshmukh on Monday night, following 12 hours of questioning, in connection with extortion and money laundering allegations levelled against him by the former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh.
Singh had alleged that Anil Deshmukh was involved in several wrongdoings, including asking dismissed Mumbai police officer Sachin Waze to collect Rs 100 crore from bars and restaurants in Mumbai. (ANI)
The money laundering case against Deshmukh and others was made out after the CBI booked him in a corruption case related to allegations of at least Rs 100 crore bribery made by former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh.
Besides, The ED had initiated a probe against Deshmukh and his associates after the CBI filed its FIR against the NCP leader on April 21 on charges of corruption and misuse of official position.
The ED’s case is that Deshmukh, while serving as home minister, misused his official position and through dismissed cop Sachin Waze collected Rs 4.70 crore from various bars and restaurants in Mumbai.
Besides Deshmukh, the ED has arrested his two aides – Kundan Shinde and Sanjeev Palande – in connection with the case. The duo are currently in judicial custody.
